What is Cylindrical Grinding?
Cylindrical grinding is a manufacturing process that is best suited to parts requiring extreme precision with the surface grinding procedure and finish. The process can be used for single and multiple diameter shafts, where concentricity between the diameters or centre line is important.
Similar in operation to our CNC lathes, the work piece requiring grinding is rotated around a central axis. However, instead of cutting the metal like the lathe, a rotating grinding wheel is used to grind away the metal excess from the work piece, usually in tiny amounts.
The work piece is held in a precision chuck and is also able to traverse from left to right to enable grinding along its entire length.
To enable the grinding processes, the abrasive element – the grinding wheel, must be harder than the work piece. Various grinding wheels are used, including synthetic compound, carbide and diamond wheels.
